Do you dare to meet the Sarvant? This mischievous ghost haunts Bugey’s houses and the castle on the night of Hallowe’en!

Présentation

This former stronghold is an emblematic monument of the unification of Ain with the Kingdom of France in 1601, under the reign of Henry IV. An impressive military and medieval sentinel, the castle sits high above the Ain plains and can be seen from all around.

A vestige of the signing of the Treaty of Lyon

Back in the 16th century, René de Lucinge, the ambassador of Savoy, lived in Château des Allymes. He was one of the main negotiators of the Lyon Treaty, which was signed in 1601. Negotiations took place in Lyon, the capital of the Gauls, after which the regions of Bresse, Bugey, Valromey and Pays de Gex were ceded to Henri IV and the Kingdom of France.

A military fortress, perched in the first foothills of the Bugey mountains, the castle has stood tall above the Ain plains for more than 700 years. The tower, castle keep and curtain walls are a reminder of the internal fighting that took place between the Dauphiné and Savoy regions. The site was listed as a Historic Monument in 1960 and, in addition to a tour of the castle, the fort also proposes a rich cultural season of events every year, including concerts, conferences and exhibitions.

Opening hours

In April & October : every day (including public holidays) from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

In May-June & September:
Monday to Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (and public holidays) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
(NB: Ascension Day, Friday open on weekend hours)

In July and August: Every day from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 1.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. (including public holidays).

Autumn, winter and Christmas school holidays (zone A)
Every day from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Exceptional closures on January 1 and December 25.

In January, February (excluding winter holidays), March and November-December (excluding Christmas period): Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. (including public holidays)

Towers, towers and more towers!

Château des Allymes is distinguished by its two towers, one square, the keep, the other round.

And, dotted about the landscape only a few hundred metres away, there are no less than 13 chateaus all keeping watch.

“This chateau/fort sits high above Amberieu-en-Bugey, 1312, has an excellent history regarding the conflict of Savoie and Dauphiné. You park below and a short hike to the fortress of very tall walls and inside it’s a real gem. Not in ruins, well maintained, interesting narrow corridors attaching the two large towers. They do give guided tours but we were able to browse on our own, after a great brief description of the history by one of the guides. Getting there you take small roads which are beautiful.
