The Haut-Bugey lakes

The geological peculiarities of the Jura Mountains have given rise to numerous natural lakes. A precious heritage, classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, in which the trio of lakes Genin, Nantua and Sylans stands out.

Lake Nantua, a mountain setting

In Haut-Bugey, behind the pass, there’s always a lake… At the top of the Col du Berthiand, the horizon clears to reveal a splendid panorama. Lac de Nantua and its 141 hectares sparkle, nestling like a diamond between the high limestone cliffs.

Surrounded by mountains, this lake offers changing views depending on the position of the sun.

Lake Sylans and its glaciers

A few kilometers further on, Lac de Sylans, a pike fisherman’s paradise, is revealed. Beneath its apparent calm, it reveals itself to be the most theatrical: born of a spectacular rock collapse, it also tells the story of ice houses and the ice trade, witnesses to a singular industrial activity.

Please note

When Lake Sylans reigned supreme over the ice

There was a time when Lac de Sylans offered much more than a simple reflection: it provided ice, the real thing, which was cut with a saw before being shipped to the four corners of France. Joachim Moinat, a visionary of the cold, transformed this winter mirror into a flourishing business in the 19th century.

Lake Genin, discreet and irresistible

We continue on our way, taking a small road that plunges into the forest. Suddenly, at an altitude of 830 m, the shores of an emerald lake appear: Lac Genin. Here, the timeless scenery is surprisingly reminiscent of Canada!
