From the Bresse bocage to the étang de La Dombes, known for its thousand ponds classified as a remarkable site, you'll find yourself in the middle of nature along the way. Cycling remains the best way to discover this land of water.
This Ain à Vélo itinerary, dedicated to bicycle travelers, is suitable for cyclists who are used to cycling. On this first day, head for Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne to begin your tour. You'll continue on to the Georges Blanc Village in Vonnas, an enchanting place marked by the famous Michelin-starred chef for 40 years. Head back towards Buellas to reach Saint-Paul-de-Varax, via Saint-André-sur-Vieux-Jonc, to spend the night at Domaine de La Dombes, where you can enjoy a unique experience: sleeping on the water. After a good night's rest, you'll be back on the road to Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, listed as one of France's "Most Beautiful Detours", before finishing your tour in Thoissey, home to an apothecary, an old-fashioned pharmacy. As an option for the more courageous, make the detour to Le Plantay from Saint-Paul-de-Varax via Saint-Nizier-le-Désert, where you can visit the Cistercian Abbey of Notre Dame des Dombes.
