The Col de Portes, also known as Calvaire de Portes (1,010 m), is one of the highest passes in the region, with 8 possible climbs. It was included in the Tour de France in 2003, on the 7th stage between Lyon and Morzine, won by Richard Virenque. A number of riders have left their mark on the route, with their names inscribed on the ground.
The Col du Calvaire de Portes is very irregular, alternating between flats and slopes. The climb is 16 km long, with a difference in altitude of 728 m and an average gradient of 4.6 %. From Charvieux, a lovely hiking loop climbs to the Calvaire de Portes and its panoramic viewpoint overlooking a vast panorama from Mont-Blanc to the Cévennes.
Please be aware that traffic is particularly heavy during the vacation season.
