Probably the most difficult climb, but also the most beautiful!
The Col de Portes, also known as the Calvaire de Portes (1,010 m), is one of the highest passes in the region, with 8 possible ascents. From Serrières de Briord, it's the best-known ascent, and certainly the most difficult on all sides. This long, fairly sustained 12 km climb has a vertical drop of 782 m and a maximum gradient of 9.2 % in its most difficult part, as there is no respite near the Coux sheepfolds and then on the D99 to the Col.
The itinerary follows pleasant roads with little traffic, offering magnificent landscapes of astonishing diversity (cool forests, pasture combes, panoramic views of the Alps...) and a rich heritage of traditional Buges architecture, with rural houses with staircase gables covered in lauzes.
Magnificent views over the superb Chartreuse de Portes and from the Alps to the Cévennes.
