Âmes Urbaines presents the street art of Charlie, an artist rooted in hip-hop culture. His works combine graffiti, emotions and street portraits, revealing the strength, fragility and dignity of those whom the city renders invisible.
Emerging from the hip-hop movement of the 1990s, Charlie has been developing an artistic practice deeply rooted in urban culture for more than twenty years.
From his beginnings in vandal graffiti to monumental murals created for schools, communities and businesses, his career illustrates a constant evolution between rebellion, aesthetic exploration and human commitment.
Based in Geneva, he also works in the social field, in direct contact with the realities on the ground. This experience feeds his vision and infuses his work with a rare sincerity. His canvases capture the faces, postures and gestures of
everyday life — those of the forgotten, the resistant, the ‘upright’ of the street.
On canvas, he transposes the codes of graffiti: aerosols, markers, collages, dripping lettering. Each composition is a collision between urban chaos and the fragility of human beings.
The background, often worked with spray paint, becomes a field of tension; the line, quick and instinctive, becomes a cry or a whisper.
Charlie does not paint the street as a backdrop, but as a social mirror. He restores visibility and dignity to those we do not see, while reaffirming the roots of an art form born on the margins.
