Ain mountains: the top activities to try out!

Discover our selection of winter activities & outings in the Ain mountains. Move, slide, visit, enjoy or take your time…

More than a setting, an experience

Mountains are serious business. In the Ain, it’s lived to the full! Here, you can fly on a zip line, hurtle down the slopes on a 4-season toboggan, slide or roll with the biathlon and scoot on an electric scooter. After the effort, a Nordic bath or a night in a tipi to recharge the batteries. The mountains of the Ain region offer adventure, whether gentle or thrilling, silence and breathtaking panoramas.

GRISANT Rail sledging at Monts Jura

At Col de la Faucille, one of Europe’s longest rail toboggan runs awaits you. With a length of 1,365 metres, gradients of up to 37% and a 540° twist, this descent promises to be a thrill. Comfortably seated, alone or in pairs, you hurtle down the mountain, master of your own speed thanks to the integrated brakes. Every bend, every acceleration is an invitation to adrenalin, all set against the majestic backdrop of the Monts Jura.

THE THRILL OF THE DESCENT Giant zip line at Monts Jura

At the summit of the Col de la Faucille, at an altitude of 1,323 metres, the void opens up before you. Beneath your feet, 905 meters of taut cable, a vertiginous 37% gradient, all for a dazzling descent to the village of Mijoux, 312 meters below. Let go, feel the adrenalin rush as you hurtle along at almost 90 km/h, the wind howling in your ears, the Pays de Gex landscape flashing by in a blur of exhilaration. Alone or accompanied, as the double zip line allows you to share this experience in tandem, dare to defy gravity and taste absolute freedom.

FOR PEDESTRIANS Climb without breaking a sweat with our lifts

Want to hit the heights without breaking out the cardio? In the Ain mountains, pedestrian-accessible lifts take you gently to the heights. Take to the skies from Crozet, Lélex or Col de la Faucille, and let the gondolas drop you off in front of breathtaking panoramas. Up there, everything invites you to slow down: a hike on the ridges, a picnic with a view of Mont Blanc or just a breath of fresh air to savor in silence.

PRECISION AND ADRENALIN Biathlon on the Plateu de Retord

Summer or winter, the Plans d’Hotonnes biathlon stadium puts you in the shoes of an athlete. In winter, cross-country skis on your feet, breathless, you aim for the target between two accelerations. In summer, skis give way to rollerblades or running, but the pressure remains the same: aim accurately, control your breathing and keep up the pace.

ADRENALIN IN SILENCE Swincar and electric scooter

On the Plateau de Retord, the sound of engines gives way to the whistle of the wind. On an electric scooter, you thread your way through the trees, the ground moving beneath your wheels, freedom at your fingertips. Then there’s the Swincar: a strange, silent machine that hugs the terrain with disconcerting precision. A steep ascent, a brutal descent, and that feeling of total control. Accessible, eco-friendly, exhilarating. The kind of experience that leaves the body tired and the mind light.

LIFE-SIZE ADVENTURE Nature game or survival course

In the deep forests of the Ain, Montagne Aventure immerses you in a raw, immersive experience. Learn how to survive in the wild: light a fire, build a shelter, recognize edible plants. Or let yourself be tempted by the Nature Game at Lac Genin: a life-size investigation, where every clue brings you closer to the truth. Two experiences, one promise: push your limits and rediscover your primal instincts.

TAKE TO THE SKIES Paragliding in Ain

All year round, except during the snowy season, treat yourself to a break in the air with Didier Marinet, a state-certified instructor since 1988. From the Sorgia site, you take off gently, carried by the updrafts. The Valserine valley opens up beneath you, Mont Blanc looms on the horizon, and the Jura rolls out its verdant crests.

Did you know? The Ain mountains are perfect for a first-timer!

Gentle slopes, accessible trails, adapted activities… Here, children make their first glides, beginners discover hiking without pressure, and families enjoy the mountains together, summer and winter alike. An ideal playground for learning, trying out and, above all, having fun.

PURE INSTINCT Running with dogs

Winter, the crunch of the sled on the snow, the breath of the dogs in the cold. You glide through the wide-open spaces of the Ain region, pulled by a pack that just wants to keep moving. In summer, it’s cani-rando: one pulling line, one dog, one rhythm to match your own. A furry encounter in every season!

A PARENTHESIS Espace bien-être de la Praille

Nestled in the heart of the La Praille Nordic ski area on the Plateau d’Hauteville, the Espace bien-être invites you to a unique relaxation experience, summer and winter alike. Imagine yourself immersed in an open-air Nordic bath, with water heated to 38°C caressing your skin, while you contemplate the soothing mountain scenery.
