Divonne-les-Bains, named after the Celtic goddess Divona, lies on the edge of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park. The quality of its waters and its environment predisposed it to becoming a spa focused on relaxation and fitness.
Its proximity to Geneva international airport has favored the establishment of an internationally renowned casino and hotels****. Divonne-les-Bains is surrounded by unspoilt nature. Leisure activities around Lake Divonne are easily accessible. Divonne-les-Bains is the gateway to the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park.
In the 1st century AD, the Romans tapped Divonne's springs and piped them to Noviodunum (now Nyon), the capital of their colony, to supply the thermal baths via an 11 km-long underground aqueduct. Divonne became a spa when Doctor Paul Vidart set up a Hydrotherapy Institute in 1849. From 1892 onwards, it was known as "Divonne-les-Bains", and lived to the sumptuous rhythm of the posh spa towns of the belle époque.
More than 30 springs gush forth in the commune of Divonne-les-Bains. The Tourist Office's "visit to the springs" takes you on a stroll through the greenery, with anecdotes and local legends: a visit to Divonne along the water's edge.
Divonne-les-Bains has an exceptional geographical location: right next to Lake Geneva, just a few minutes from Geneva, one of Europe's cultural beacons, at the foot of the Haute Chaîne du Jura and its magnificent viewpoints, facing (as a backdrop) the eternal snows of the Mont Blanc massif. This privileged position offers a wide range of excursions in France and Switzerland, whether they're motivated by a visit to world-famous sites or by the pleasure of hiking in the mid-range mountains. Divonne-les-Bains is a half-hour's drive from the Monts Jura resort (in winter, ski bus on weekends and during school vacations), the most important resort in the Franco-Swiss Jura massif. Divonne-les-Bains is part of "Léman sans frontière", a tourist network grouping together 39 French and Swiss sites, which has earned it the title of "Ville Porte de Projet INTERREG 4". It therefore deserves the title of "gateway town to Switzerland", as well as that of "gateway town" to the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Jura!
Divonne-les-Bains boasts a vast leisure zone, with a 45-hectare artificial lake (no cars allowed on its shores), beach, swimming pool, yacht club, miniature golf course, forest acrobatic course, racecourse (horse races in summer), bowling green, educational trails and picnic areas. Access and parking are free throughout the area.
60% of the commune is included within the perimeter of the Haute Chaîne du Jura Nature Reserve. The flora and fauna of the immense forest that dominates Divonne are therefore preserved. Divonne is the starting point for six hiking trails of varying levels. They have been marked out by the Communauté de Communes du Pays de Gex. One of them links up with the Grande Traversée du Jura.
Since 1954, Divonne-les-Bains has boasted a prestigious chamber music festival.
Since 2005, Divonne-les-Bains has been home to the Esplanade du Lac concert hall.
