To mark the 43rd edition of European Heritage Days, the Centre des monuments nationaux invites you to explore—free of charge for one weekend—the castle where Voltaire spent the last twenty years of his life as a great philosopher

What's on the agenda: - Self-guided tour of the historical trail and gardens: Travel back to the Age of Enlightenment as you explore the home where Voltaire spent the last twenty years of his life and put the famous line “We must tend our garden” into Candide’s mouth! Soak up the intimate atmosphere of Voltaire’s bedroom and experience life in a château in the apartments of Madame Denis, the philosopher’s niece and companion! Discover the exhibition “Sergio Toppi, Il maestro” upstairs and the exhibition “The Fates of Candide” on the garden level. Continue your exploration of the estate and follow the paths that lead you to Voltaire’s greatest achievement in his gardens: the arbour! Be sure to take a stroll through the permaculture vegetable garden and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Alps and the Jura Mountains! - Quick tour of the exhibition “I Went Down into My Garden… The Fates of Candide”: Enjoy a tour of the exhibition “I Went Down into My Garden… The Fates of Candide” during European Heritage Days at Voltaire’s Castle!
