  • The Ain department and southern Jura are now a key area for understanding prehistoric settlements.

The southern part of the Jura Mountains, nestled among valleys, caves, and rock shelters, preserves numerous traces of early human settlements. From prehistory through the dawn of agricultural societies, men and women traversed these resource-rich lands, leaving behind stone tools, ornaments, hearths, and the remains of dwellings.

The natural cavities of the Bugey and the Jura mountains have allowed for the exceptional preservation of numerous human settlements, some dating back more than 12,000 years.

Among the iconic sites are: the Grotte des Hoteaux in Rossillon and other sites discovered around Belley and Culoz. These sites bear witness to the daily life of Paleolithic and Mesolithic hunter-gatherer groups, followed by the first Neolithic farming communities.

This panel exhibition invites you to discover the main prehistoric sites of the Ain and southern Jura regions, major archaeological discoveries, and the work of researchers who are helping to bring this ancient history to life.
