GOOD TO KNOW

An aqueduct for the Roman colony

An aqueduct was built in 34 B.C. to bring water from the Emma and Ausone springs to Nyon, where the veterans, former cavalrymen in Julius Caesar’s army, had settled and received land. Buried to protect the water from contamination, the 10 to 11 kilometer aqueduct guaranteed the colony’s water supply.

Some remains of the aqueduct remain, including a section unearthed in Divonne at the end of the 20th century. Studied, it has now been reproduced identically on the banks of Lake Divonne.
