Places of remembrance in the Ain

The Ain, land of memory and courage. From the silent walls of the Maison d’Izieu to the poignant stories told at the Musée de la Résistance in Nantua, and the heroic spirit of the Oyonnax parade, history still resonates. Because to remember is also to understand.

Maison d'Izieu A place to remember

The memorial to the exterminated Jewish children remains linked to one of the most shocking tragedies of the Second World War, before becoming a national place of remembrance.

Ain Museum of Resistance and Deportation

Along with the Maison d’Izieu in the southern Bugey region, this is one of the region’s main memorial sites dedicated to the Second World War. Dedicated to the memory of the Maquis, the museum’s collections retrace the role and feelings of the local population, and offer a scientific perspective on the events.

Ain maquis trail A heroic page in history

During the Second World War, the Plateau de Retord became one of the major strongholds of the French Resistance. Isolated and difficult to access, this territory offered a strategic refuge to the maquisards, who organized sabotage actions, parachute drops and battles against the occupying forces. The parade in Oyonnax in 1943, when resistance fighters braved danger by marching through the town in uniform, has become a powerful symbol of their courage. Today, the maquis trail retraces this history, inviting you to walk between memory and nature, in the footsteps of those who fought for freedom.
